Does CMC Markets Have Auto Invest?

CMC Markets offers auto investing features in some regions, notably Australia, and other automated trading options in other countries. However, CMC doesn’t provide a set and forget style of automated investing for most clients.

“Auto invest” means different things to different people. Long-term investors usually mean recurring purchases into ETFs or shares. CFD traders often mean algorithmic trading using Expert Advisors. Other retail investors mean automatically copying the trades of experienced investors, while some may use it to describe putting their money with an automated robo-advisor. Here’s how CMC Markets handles each type of automation:

CMC Invest: Algorithmic Orders (Australia Only)

CMC’s Australian share investing arm offers institutional-style order types on ASX equities:

  • VWAP — executes proportionally to projected trading volume over a set period
  • TWAP — splits a large order into equal time slots
  • ASX Opening Auction — targets the open price
  • ASX Closing Auction — targets the close price

These tools help manage large orders with minimal market impact, but they are not what most people mean by “auto investing”. CMC Invest in Australia also offers a recurring trade option, allowing scheduled investments into shares or ETFs at regular intervals.

Automated Trading via MT4 and MT5

This is where CMC has real capability. MT4 and MT5 both support expert advisors (EAs) – coded programs that open, manage, and close trades automatically based on rules you define.

What you can do:

  • Build strategies in MetaEditor (included with MT4/MT5)
  • Backtest against historical data before going live
  • Run EAs 24/5 using CMC’s VPS — your strategy keeps running even when your computer is off
  • Use strategies like grid trading, mean reversion, and momentum

Advanced algorithmic traders who don’t want to use MetaTrader EAs can also automate custom strategies using CMC Connect’s FIX API.

What you can’t do:

  • Run EAs on CMC’s proprietary platform — EAs only work through MetaTrader
  • Use EA automation on account types that don’t include MT4/MT5 access — check your account terms first

We tested a simple moving-average crossover EA on CMC’s MT4. Execution was clean. The VPS kept it running over a weekend without dropping.

CMC’s published median execution time for MT4 trades is 0.018 seconds. That’s fine for most retail strategies, but not fast enough for high-frequency approaches.

What CMC Doesn’t Offer

Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 68% of retail investor accounts lose money when spread betting and/or trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
