Why Trade With Exness?
Exness is an excellent choice for active forex traders aiming to reduce costs after lowering spreads, enhancing execution speeds, and offering trading on over 100 currency pairs with more than 40 account currencies.
Pros
- 24/7 multilingual customer support by phone, email, and live chat, tested for speed and reliability.
- Charting tools are enhanced with Indie. Traders can create Python scripts, add custom indicators to charts in Exness Terminal and MT5, and test them with market data.
- Execution speeds now average under 25ms, supporting short-term traders.
Cons
- Exness has increased its CFDs offerings, but still lacks real assets like ETFs, cryptocurrencies, or bonds.
- MetaTrader 4 and 5 are supported, but TradingView and cTrader are not, despite growing trader demand and support from brokers like Pepperstone.
- Retail trading services can't be accessed in some areas, like the US, UK, EU, and recently India, unlike top-tier brokers such as Interactive Brokers.
Why Trade With AvaTrade?
AvaTrade provides traders with essential tools: an intuitive WebTrader, strong AvaProtect risk management, a quick 5-minute sign-up, and reliable support for fast-paced markets.
Pros
- AvaTrade introduced AvaFutures for low-margin global market access and expanded in 2025 by adding CME’s Micro Grain Futures. Later that year, they integrated with TradingView.
- The WebTrader performed well in our tests, featuring an easy-to-use interface for beginners and strong charting tools, including 6 chart layouts and over 60 technical indicators.
- AvaTrade's support team did well in tests, responding within 3 minutes and providing local support in major regions like the UK, Europe, and the Middle East.
Cons
- Signing up is easy, but AvaTrade doesn't offer an ECN account like Pepperstone or IC Markets, which provides raw spreads and fast execution that many traders want.
- The AvaSocial app is satisfactory but could be better. Its design, usability, and navigation between strategy providers and account management need improvement to compete with top platforms like eToro.
- AvaTrade’s WebTrader has improved, but it needs more customization as widgets like market watch and watchlists can't be hidden, moved, or resized.
Why Trade With XM?
With a $5 minimum deposit, advanced charting on MT4 and MT5, a growing range of markets, and a Zero account with spreads from 0.0, XM offers what traders need. They have even won our 'Best MT4/MT5 Broker' award recently.
Pros
- XM has updated its platform with integrated TradingView charts and an XM AI assistant for faster execution, smarter analysis, and a more intuitive trading experience.
- XM’s Zero account is ideal for trading with spreads from 0.0 pips, 99.35% of orders executed in <1 second, without requotes or rejections.
- XM excels in trader education by providing well-organized resources like webinars, tutorials, and live trading sessions via XM Live.
Cons
- XM is lagging because it doesn't offer cTrader, which some professional traders prefer over MetaTrader for its better usability and advanced charting features.
- XM only uses MetaTrader platforms for desktop trading, meaning there is no customizable downloadable option for a more beginner-friendly experience with unique features.
- Although generally trusted and well-regulated in some areas, XM also has global entities registered with weaker regulators like FSC (Belize) and FSA (Seychelles). Additionally, it no longer accepts UK clients, limiting its market reach.
Why Trade With Trade Nation?
Trade Nation is suitable for discretionary traders interested in speculating on major indices like the US 500 or liquid FX pairs, with the predictability of fixed spreads. Our tests showed the fixed-spread TN Trader platform is beneficial for trading during scheduled economic releases due to its reliable charting and capped spreads.
Pros
- Trade Nation accounts can now connect with TradingView, enabling advanced multi-charts and direct trade execution.
- The demo includes a $5,000 practice account and a one-on-one platform walkthrough by callback.
- Trade Nation's 2026 partnership with Volt has accelerated payments for Australian traders. They can now make instant deposits and withdrawals using PayID. Faster payout features are planned for clients in the UK and EU.
Cons
- The 2–20% rebate program is not available to FCA, CMVM, and ASIC clients, so active traders in these areas cannot receive transaction rebates.
- Offshore SCB and FSA entities offer retail clients leverage up to 1:200 and 1:500, compared to 1:30 in the UK, Europe, and Australia. This means FSA clients can have 16 times the exposure of UK retail clients on the same trade, but with less oversight and no compensation scheme.
- There is no raw or ECN pricing, which many traders prefer. Regardless of your deposit or trading volume, you will use the same fixed (or variable on MT4) pricing as beginners, making it unsuitable for scalpers.
Why Trade With FBS?
FBS is a great option for traders of all levels and budgets, offering a $5 minimum deposit and a comprehensive academy for new traders, along with access to MT4 and MT5.
Pros
- FBS combines strong features with ease of use. Sign-up takes <10 minutes, and the app is easy to use. It offers Market Analytics, VIP Analytics, and education through the FBS Academy and Trader’s Blog.
- The FBI Assistant provides traders with AI-driven insights to evaluate charts and patterns, offering potential trade ideas that can be executed with one click.
- 24/7 customer support, proven excellent in testing, is available with a $5 minimum deposit and over 200 funding options, ideal for traders with small accounts.
Cons
- There are only four base currencies available: EUR, USD, AUD, and JPY (dependent on region). This is not ideal for reducing currency conversion fees for many international traders, especially since the broker's users are from over 150 countries.
- The FBS app is excellent for beginner traders and MT4/MT5 is suitable for advanced ones. However, the lack of cTrader and TradingView, available on alternatives like Pepperstone, might be a drawback for traders familiar with these platforms.
- FBS offers over 70 currency pairs but has fewer commodities and indices than industry leaders like BlackBull Markets.

Evaluation Methodology For Selecting The Top Brokers In South Africa
We took a three-pronged approach to list the best trading platforms for South Africans:
- Regulatory Authorization by the FSCA: Providers must hold an active Financial Services Provider (FSP) license from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA). This was essential to ensure we only show providers committed to following South Africa’s market conduct and investor safeguard standards. Each broker’s license was independently verified against the FSCA official FSP register and has been rechecked every six months since.
- Onboarding of South African Residents: We signed up for accounts at each broker using a local IP address in Johannesburg, while also double-checking that ‘South Africa’ was not listed among brokers’ restricted territories, either in the footer of their website or in the client terms.
- Hands-On Testing: Our team of brokerage experts and experienced traders tested each provider in eight key categories, gathering close to 300 data points per broker. These, alongside our practical observations, directly informed brokers’ final ratings, which were used to rank providers. The BrokerListings.com team has devoted over 550 hours to testing the trading platforms shown.

How To Choose The Right Broker For Trading In South Africa
Each trader has different needs depending on their minimum investment, strategy, preferred platform or app, risk appetite, and access to features like copy trading and joining offers. Still, it’s worth asking these key questions to narrow down your search:
Can I Trust The Broker?
You should only use a broker you can trust with your funds. The best peace of mind you can get is by choosing a broker authorized by the FSCA that’s been operating for over five years, and that has overwhelmingly positive user reviews on a range of sites. An authorized OTC Derivative Provider (ODP) must:
- Keep liquid net assets funded by equity equal to at least 6 months of operating expenses to ensure solvency, in line with FSCA Conduct Standard 1 of 2018.
- Segregate client money from company funds to help reduce the risk of misuse. These should be held in approved banking institutions, often in South Africa.
- Use automated margin close-out mechanisms and stop-out controls to prevent client accounts from dropping below required maintenance thresholds, under Joint Standard 2 of 2020.
- Report all executed, modified, or terminated OTC derivative transactions daily to an approved Trade Repository using Unique Transaction Identifiers (UTI) and Legal Entity Identifiers (LEI).
- Employ a local, resident Key Individual (KI) who has passed the FSCA’s regulatory examinations (RE1 and RE5) to oversee local management and compliance.
- Assess whether leveraged derivative products suit the client’s financial profile and explicitly disclose the costs, spreads, and risks involved.
Do They Offer South African Markets?
We checked our broker database, and fewer than 10% offer trading on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). However, the majority do offer trading on currency pairs containing the ZAR, most commonly ZAR/USD, EUR/ZAR, and GBP/ZAR, which are considered exotic pairs. You can also expect to trade commodities linked to South Africa’s economy, such as gold, oil, and platinum.
Alongside local markets, check whether the broker offers trading opportunities on wider geographies and sectors if that’s what you’re interested in. Over 90% offer trading on US and European stocks, while many offer hard and soft commodities, plus higher-risk cryptocurrencies, often through derivatives like CFDs.
Are The Trading Fees Low?
This is essential to maximize profit margins, and especially if you’re an active swing or day trader, where frequent transaction charges can add up. You often have a choice of a spread-only account, with pips from around 1 pip (appeals to casual traders) or a raw spread account with spreads from 0 pips with a commission of often around $7 per round-trip turn (appeals to experienced, active traders).
South Africans should keep in mind spreads that can be wide on ZAR currency pairs. This is because they often have less volume and more volatility than more prominent currency pairs like EUR/USD and USD/JPY. For instance, during testing, we looked at the ZAR/USD spread for our top brokers during the same trading session, and the lowest spread was 4 pips, while the highest was 54 pips, and the average was around 23 pips.
Is A ZAR Trading Account Supported?
Choosing a broker with a ZAR trading account is often sensible for South African traders. Deposits, fees, account balances, and withdrawals will be shown in Rand. This makes the trading experience smoother while potentially reducing conversion fees vs if you deposited in USD, which then gets converted to Rand, and vice versa at the withdrawal stage. A growing number of brokers accepting South African traders offer ZAR accounts.
Keep in mind that if you trade assets denominated in another currency, such as US technology stocks, you may have to pay a conversion charge if your account is in fact based in ZAR.
Is The Platform Suitable?
If you’re a chart trader, you want a platform with a user-friendly but feature-rich charting package, whether that’s the broker’s own software or a third-party option (MT4, MT5, cTrader, and TradingView are most common).
If you’re a news trader or act on fundamentals, you may want a broker with an integrated newsfeed, market sentiment data, and analyst insights.
Learning a new platform takes time – we know we’ve spent many thousands of hours using, configuring and trading on desktop, web, and mobile platforms. The best way for a prospective user to check what’s available, and to make sure they like the software is through a demo trading account. Like it? Upgrade to a real money account. Don’t like it? Try another broker. Don’t rush the decision.

Do They Have Trading Incentives?
Some traders want a broker with a welcome bonus in South Africa, and we’ve rounded up the best options. Often, a deposit match bonus or no deposit bonus credit can be a boost to your starting capital and is permitted under the FSCA’s rules.
However, we believe such joining bonuses are best used for testing a potential broker or strategy. Used incorrectly, they can encourage gambling-like behavior.
Also, we’ve traded with many bonuses and read tens of thousands of words of bonus terms, and they often make it difficult to withdraw bonus credit and associated profits, requiring you to trade many multiples of the bonus amount.
FAQ
Who Regulates Trading Brokers In South Africa?
The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) regulates trading brokers in South Africa. The FSCA is a Category B body in BrokerListings.com’s regulator bandings, providing fairly good oversight of authorized providers and mandated safeguards for retail investors.
While we regularly review the FSCA license details for our top-rated brokers, retail traders can check this themselves in minutes by typing in the broker’s name in the List of Regulated Entities and People.
What Is The Minimum South African Rand To Open A Brokerage Account?
Nowadays, you can open an online trading account with as little as 0 ZAR, up to several thousand ZAR. There’s been a trend amongst many brokers to reduce or remove their starting investment to attract new traders. You can check our list of the top brokers with a low minimum deposit.
This will be welcome news to many smaller retail traders, but keep in mind that starting with a small balance doesn’t leave you much room for movement if markets move against you and you’re trading on leverage. Your margin could be wiped out, and your broker may automatically close out your positions.
