Does this sound familiar?

  • You’re on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, or another social platform, and a confident man, often standing near a luxury car, in an exotic destination, or a suave office, tells you learning to trade doesn’t have to be difficult, and they can help you for “free”.
  • You’re directed to a Telegram group where there are scrolls of messages with wins e.g. “473.77 today” or “$1067.79 for the week” (both messages we’ve seen), often accompanied by screenshots from trading platforms and supposed accounts.
  • You’re invited to follow “VIP” signals shared daily that you can copy for free in your own trading account if you use their recommended broker, which they share a link to.

The problem is, as we demonstrate later, adverts often paint a picture of success that is, we believe, unlikely to become the reality for most subscribers; Telegram groups spotlight wins while losses are largely absent; And some signal providers make their money by pushing users towards offshore, high-risk brokers.

Table notes:

  • Numbers of subscribers were true at the time of investigation but may change over time.
  • Risk Score is based on the tester’s judgement after analyzing adverts used, Telegram feeds, sales tactics, and the safety of brokers users are encouraged to sign up with.
  • We are not labelling any of these signal groups trading scams – we are highlighting our safety concerns after joining their groups and interacting with operators or their support.
I would not put my own money behind signals posted in these Telegram groups, no matter how convincing the posted winning results look. I’ve seen too many questionable sales tactics. If I were looking for signals, I’d use NinjaTrader – a trusted broker that provides signals with transparency.

3 Red Flags To Watch For

After countless hours spent watching adverts for trading signals on forex, gold and other markets, reading hundreds of messages in the Telegram groups themselves, and directly speaking with those that run the channels, here are key safety issues to be aware of:

1. Adverts With Displays Of Wealth

The majority of adverts we’ve seen on social media feature a man who looks between 20 and 40 in a background containing luxury cars (Lamborghinis seem to be the most popular, with Mercedes (often a G Wagon) the runner-up), or in a fancy hotel by a beach resort, or in a smart office with various screens showing trading charts.

The overt or subtle picture painted in most of these adverts is that these traders are successful and have made money, and that by following their guidance, you could too.

This jars with the reality, which is that the majority of retail investors lose money trading online, including if they’re following signals or copy trading. ESMA in Europe found that 74-89% of retail investors dealing CFDs lose money; the FCA in the UK has noted approximately 80% of retail investors lose money, while the ASIC in Australia has said 68% of retail investors lose money.

You also need to remember these adverts are just that – adverts. Cars, boats and jets can be rented, while hotel rooms can be bought for just one night. The lifestyle being portrayed in adverts isn’t necessarily the day-to-day reality. It might be in some instances, but we’d apply a healthy dose of skepticism.

Below are real adverts we’ve seen that paint a picture of wealth and success.

2. Telegram Feeds That Only Show Wins

When you land in the Telegram group, you’re often immediately greeted with a feed showing multiple people posting wins e.g. “£2,060 profit” or “+250 pips”. There are often lots of glittering emojis for cash and screenshots of trading accounts, normally from the MetaTrader app, showing a string of wins.

But where are the losses? There’s often little mention of losses, even if you scroll far back. Messages we’ve seen on some groups suggest all of the day’s signals, up to 10, are winning. We’ve seen high win rates of over 70%, even 80% and more, claimed.

Yet even professional active traders lose money and often make losing trades. Of course, these groups are trying to sell signals, so they’re going to focus on the wins, but their claimed statistics can be suspiciously high, and the lack of reported losses is a reason to pause.

We also ran a test where we learned that in the groups we looked at, results posted weren’t reflective of the correct split between wins and losses (we documented a win rate of just over 40%, yet the group showed a win rate of over 60%). Over half of losing trades weren’t mentioned in the group, and some losing trades were even removed.

It’s worth pointing out that lots of groups do have basic risk disclaimers, e.g. “Your capital is at risk”, especially at the bottom of initial social media adverts, but these disclaimers are often quickly overshadowed by the noise of frequent wins when you enter these groups.

Additionally, it’s hard to verify whether screenshots and messages of wins in signals groups are genuine. They could be faked, created with artificial intelligence, or stem from demo accounts rather than live accounts. Now we are not saying any of the groups in our warning list above are lying about their results – this isn’t something we can prove, but we are saying we’d approach them with a healthy dose of skepticism.

An irony is that we’ve also seen many groups in their adverts or feeds say all other groups lose money and they’re the only legit ones that actually make profits. They can’t all be right.

Below are real examples from groups with plenty of gains and questionably high win rates.

3. They Push You To Trade With An Offshore Broker And Aren’t Upfront About Risks

Be wary of being encouraged to sign up with a brokerage that isn’t based in your country, and that will onboard you through an entity overseen by a weak financial regulator.

We’ve seen it many times where VIP signals are “free” if you open an account with their partner brokerage, which they share a link to, and this means the group operator will likely get a fixed commission or a percentage of your trading volume in return.

Now this isn’t in itself an issue. Broker referral deals in the online broker space are very common and used by well-regulated brokers, trusted industry websites, and individual traders looking to grow a revenue stream. However, operators should be transparent about these relationships upfront (and some Telegram groups are to be fair).

It’s also still important to understand the risks of using an overseas broker that may not be authorized by a Category A or B body in BrokerListings’ regulator classification system, which some (not all) groups we joined suggested traders sign up with. Brokers regulated by Category C bodies often have entities based overseas in offshore jurisdictions like the Seychelles and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Their financial regulators are known to enforce limited safeguards for retail investors. For example:

  • There’s often no statutory mandated compensation scheme in the event the broker becomes insolvent.
  • There are normally no restrictions on leverage, which can lead to huge losses when not used carefully, especially by inexperienced retail investors.
  • There typically aren’t robust and official recourse channels in the event of withdrawal or other disputes.

The problem isn’t that brokers are based offshore (though this increases the risks), it’s that prospective clients should be aware of the risks of using one over a provider authorized in a tightly controlled region, and we don’t always see that in these private Telegram groups, which are away from prying eyes.

For example, one group suggested to us that the FSA of Seychelles was a decent regulator, when it’s considered a very weak regulator by most of the industry, including us. Another group initially avoided answering our direct question about whether their broker was authorized by the FCA in the UK.

Now, not all groups we tested pushed users towards offshore, higher-risk brokers, and some were transparent about their regulatory credentials, plus their commercial relationships with these providers, but it remains something to watch out for.

Below are examples of conversations we had with signal group operators concerning the regulation of partnered brokers, with some creating a sense of urgency to sign up, e.g. “5 more spaces open only and then they’re closing.”

How To Stay Safe

The safest thing to do is avoid private Telegram groups where traders sell signals. In some, we’ve seen what we suspect are hidden losses, artificially improved win rates, signals posted too late into an expansion to properly capitalize on trends, trade calls with no stop-losses, and a sense of urgency to encourage users, often complete beginners, to join VIP groups quickly and place a high volume of trades through offshore brokers where the risks aren’t clearly disclosed.

If you do want to use forex signals and have found what looks like a legitimate provider, try running all their trade suggestions in real-time in a demo account for an extended period, i.e. one month. And then ask these questions:

  • Do the returns make financial sense?
  • Do the fees wipe out any gains?
  • Does the group recommend adequate and specific risk controls, e.g. take-profit and stop-loss levels?
  • Does the group accurately report the percentage of winning vs losing trades in the Telegram group?

If the answer to any of these is no, think twice before investing money.
