Does Moomoo Charge Fees?

Yes, Moomoo does charge fees. For example, US residents pay no commission on US stocks, ETFs, and options, but small regulatory pass-through fees still apply. Other costs include a $0.50 contract fee for index options, 6.8% margin interest, a 0.49% crypto fee, $20 to $25 for wire withdrawals, and a $75 to $100 fee if you transfer your account to another broker.

Pricing Verdict: Moomoo is inexpensive for US residents trading US stocks, ETFs, and equity options with their own cash, since most trades cost only a few cents in fees. However, costs go up if you use margin, trade index options or crypto, leave cash in the sweep program, or convert dollars for Hong Kong shares.

When I analyzed Moomoo’s pricing, it became clear there are two main costs that are easy to overlook: currency conversion, which can be as high as 3%, and a Cash Sweep shortfall fee of up to 0.5% per year.

Which Moomoo Fees Will You Actually Pay?

Stocks And ETFs: Close To Free

When you buy US shares, you only pay a small CAT fee and nothing else. If you sell $10,000 worth of stock, you’ll pay an SEC fee of about $0.21.

Watch the platform fee. Moomoo’s fee schedule notes that the $0 promotion started in November 2018 and could end at any time with 30 days’ notice. If you place many orders each day, Moomoo’s partners might consider them ‘non-retail,’ which means you’ll pay $0.0049 per share on stocks (at least $0.99) and $0.65 per options contract (at least $1.99).

Non-retail order pricing in Moomoo's terms highlighted

Options: $0 Contracts, Not $0 Trades

Moomoo no longer charges the old $0.65 per-contract fee on stock and ETF options. Now, a 10-contract trade has about $0.38 in OCC, ORF, and CAT fees each way, compared to the previous $6.50 contract fee.

Index options still cost $0.50 per contract, so trading 10 contracts means paying $5 to Moomoo, plus Cboe’s own fees, which can change at any time. Moomoo’s Form CRS says US residents pay a fee on each option contract, so ‘$0’ means there is no Moomoo contract fee on equity options.

Margin: The Biggest Recurring Cost

Moomoo advertises margin at 6.8%, but you can borrow only if your margin account holds at least $2,000 in net assets. The Margin Disclosure Statement works out interest daily on your debit balance and divides by 360, not 365.

This method increases the real annual cost. If you borrow $10,000 for 30 days, you’ll pay $56.67. Keeping the loan for a full year costs $689.44 if you pay interest as it’s posted, which is an effective rate of 6.89%. Moomoo adds interest to your account at the end of each statement period, and if you don’t pay it, it gets added to your balance and accrues more interest.

I noticed two more important details. You can open an individual cash account and an individual margin account, one of each, and only the margin account borrows. In that account, Moomoo’s help center says you can’t switch off the margin feature, and once you have $2,000 in net assets, buying without enough cash uses margin by default.

Trading from the cash account avoids that interest altogether. If you do borrow, the Moomoo Engine subscription covers the interest on your first $1,000, worth about $69 a year at 6.8%, for $11.88 a year at the $0.99 monthly rate.

Crypto And Currency Conversion

The 0.49% crypto fee applies to every trade. For example, if you buy and then sell $1,000 of Bitcoin, you’ll pay about $9.80 in fees.

Currency conversion is more expensive. Moomoo may charge up to 300 basis points, so converting $5,000 to Hong Kong dollars could cost up to $150, not including the HK$15 platform fee for each order.

Cash Sweep: The Fee Missing From The Pricing Page

Uninvested cash swept to partner banks earns interest, but banks deduct a fee and pay it to Moomoo. According to the Cash Sweep terms, this fee could be as high as 5%. If the interest earned does not cover Moomoo’s and other providers’ fees, you may be charged a shortfall fee of up to 0.50% per year on your average balance.

If you have $20,000 in swept cash, you could pay up to $100 a year in fees. Moomoo’s Form CRS also confirms that it may keep part of the interest earned on your cash.

Leaving Moomoo: $75 Or $100

According to Moomoo’s ACATS guide, the receiving broker deducts a $100 fee for each transfer request. For a $2,000 account, that’s 5% of your balance.

The fee schedule also lists a $75 fee for transfers by DTC, which Moomoo’s DTC guide says takes two to three weeks instead of three to five business days. Some older pages add confusion: one help article says US stocks can only leave by DTC, and the transfer guide linked from the fee schedule still lists $75 for every transfer out. It’s best to ask support which method and fee apply before you begin.

If you do a full ACATS transfer, your account will be restricted for 180 days afterward, and you can’t transfer fractional shares. Selling and withdrawing by ACH avoids both fees, but keep in mind that selling may result in a tax bill.

What Moomoo Costs In A Year: Three Examples

To see how these fees add up, I priced the first year for three typical US customers using Moomoo’s published rates.

The active trader makes eight round trips a month in 10 equity option contracts at an average $2 premium and carries a $10,000 margin loan all year.

The buy-and-hold investor buys $500 of a US ETF every month, holds 100 ADR shares, and keeps $3,000 in cash.

The Hong Kong investor converts $10,000 at HK$7.80 to the dollar, buys shares in four equal orders, and collects four dividends.

Cost Active options trader Buy-and-hold investor Hong Kong investor
Trading fees $76 (1,920 contract sides plus SEC fees) Under $0.01 $22 (including HK stamp duty)
Currency conversion $0 $0 Up to $300
Margin interest $689 $0 $0
Dividend collection fees $0 $0 At least $16
ADR custody fees $0 $1 to $5 $0
Cash Sweep shortfall fee (worst case) $0 (no idle cash while borrowing) Up to $15 on $3,000 $0 (fully invested)
First-year total About $765 Up to about $20 Up to about $340
Transferring out (one-off) $100 by ACATS $100 by ACATS $75

For the active trader, margin interest is about 90% of the total cost, while trading fees are minimal. If Moomoo considers those trades non-retail, the $0.65 contract fee would add $1,248. If you switch two monthly trades to 10-contract index options, you’d pay an extra $240 a year in Moomoo contract fees, not counting Cboe’s charges.

For the buy-and-hold investor, the $100 transfer-out fee equals five years’ worth of all other Moomoo costs combined. This is the main fee to consider if you think you might switch brokers.

For Hong Kong investors, currency conversion makes up almost 90% of first-year costs. Each US$2,500 order costs about HK$43 in fees, with HK$19.50 of that being Hong Kong stamp duty. Moomoo’s dividend collection fee also has a HK$30 minimum, plus at least HK$1.50 to HKEX, so a HK$500 dividend loses over 6% before you receive it.

How To Check What Moomoo Will Really Charge You

Moomoo’s advertised prices don’t include most of the costs listed above. Here’s how you can find out what you actually paid:

  1. Check your statements. In the Moomoo app, go to the ‘Accounts’ tab, tap ‘More’, then select ‘Statement’ under ‘Account’, or search for “Statement”. The exact ORF rate you pay appears on your trade confirmations, so review one after your first options trade.
  2. Check the margin details before you borrow. On a stock’s quote page, look for the ‘Long Margin’ icon, which means you can buy the stock on margin. Then, check the ‘Margin Rate’ tab on the pricing page, since Moomoo can change the rate at any time.
  3. Keep an eye on your Cash Sweep interest. Your monthly statement shows how much interest your swept cash earned and the rate that was applied. If the rate is close to zero, the shortfall fee could be higher than the interest you earn.
  4. Convert currency manually if you want more control. Go to ‘Accounts > Transfers > Exchange’ to do it yourself, instead of letting the account convert during a trade. Compare Moomoo’s rate with the current market rate first.
  5. Get written confirmation of your exit fee. Contact support before starting a transfer and ask if ACATS ($100) or DTC ($75) applies to your holdings.
