Key Factors That Work For Day Trading
- Execution. On IBKR Pro, SmartRouting hunts across exchanges, dark pools, and market makers for the best price. Fills were quick and clean in our testing.
- Order types. Trader Workstation supports 100+ order types (among the most we’ve seen), plus algos, bracket orders, and conditional orders — everything you need to manage risk on fast trades.
- Cheap margin. Pro margin rates are among the lowest anywhere, which matters if you’re leveraging intraday.
- Depth and data. Level II data, hotkeys, and deep liquidity across global markets.
- Automation. A full API for anyone running scripted or algorithmic strategies.
Watch Out For
- One active session. You can’t run the desktop platform and trade on mobile simultaneously under a single login. That’s irritating mid-session.
- Lite isn’t ideal for it. Payment for order flow can make Lite the weaker choice; active traders should be on Pro. Note Lite is primarily available in the US.
- Margin restrictions can apply. For US traders, regulators replaced the old pattern day trader rule, which restricted margin accounts below $25,000 to three day trades in five business days. In its place, brokers are following risk-based intraday margin requirements. Brokers have until October 2027 to complete the transition, so the old restriction may still apply to some IBKR accounts temporarily. These particular margin rules do not apply to clients of Interactive Brokers in other regions.
