Does Interactive Brokers Have Crypto?

Yes, Interactive Brokers offers cryptocurrency – both spot and via derivatives, but exact access depends on your location. We’ve traded spot crypto from inside the same account we used for shares, which is handy.

Crypto Availability By Region

Availability hangs on which IBKR entity holds your account and where you live. UK retail clients, for example, face tight restrictions because the FCA has banned crypto CFDs and limits crypto promotion. Here’s the breakdown of IBKR’s crypto offering by major regions:

What Cryptocurrencies Does Interactive Brokers Offer?

We logged into the IBKR platform and documented all the cryptos available before comparing it to the suite of digital assets offered by alternatives. Here’s what you need to know:

  • IBKR focuses on the most liquid assets: IBKR does not offer hundreds of speculative altcoins like you’ll find on many top crypto exchanges. Instead, it offers major, highly liquid assets including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), Avalanche (AVAX), Ripple (XRP), Dogecoin (DOGE), Chainlink (LINK), Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Uniswap (UNI), Near Protocol (NEAR), Sui (SUI), and Pax Gold (PAXG). Even though these tokens are more regularly traded, they remain high risk.
  • Regional restrictions: Coin selection depends on the custodian and region. For example, US Paxos accounts support around 20+ tokens, while IBKR Hong Kong accounts restricts spot trading to the major tokens (BTC, ETH, SOL).
  • Crypto transfers: Eligible clients can now deposit and withdraw supported cryptocurrencies directly to and from external wallets via their linked Paxos/Zero Hash account (a major upgrade from IBKR’s initial closed-loop system).

Spot Crypto

Eligible US clients of Interactive Brokers LLC can buy and hold coins through partners Paxos Trust and Zero Hash. Coverage started with Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and the broker has steadily added names such as Solana, Cardano, XRP, Dogecoin, Chainlink, and Avalanche.

Crypto commissions in the US runs at 0.12%–0.18% of trade value, with a $1.75 minimum – far cheaper than most crypto-only apps. It’s also cheaper than Hong Kong clients get, with residents paying 0.20%–0.30% (minimum $2.25 per order, capped at 1% of trade value).

Important for US residents: your coins are custodied by Paxos in your name, but outside IBKR, and aren’t SIPC-protected.

Futures And Funds

If you’d rather get crypto exposure without holding the coins, as a leading crypto broker, IBKR also offers the below, depending on your region:

  • Crypto futures on the CME (including Micro Bitcoin contracts).
  • A wide range of crypto ETFs and ETPs, plus trusts like GBTC.
