What Works Well For Beginners
- No minimum deposit: You can open a live account with no starting deposit. This allows you to test real spreads and execution without risking significant capital. Many brokers still require an initial deposit of $10 to $200.
- Demo account – unlimited, realistic: The demo account includes $10,000 in virtual funds and matches the live platform exactly – we know we’ve placed dozens of trades in it on major forex pairs and stock indices. We did not find inflated fills or artificial spreads in demo mode. Unlike many brokers that limit demo access to 30 days, CMC does not set a time limit.
- Education – broad but unfiltered: CMC offers written guides, video tutorials, webinars, and in-person events for live account holders. We’d start with the Knowledge Hub, set it to ‘Beginner’, and read the following educational materials that are well-presented and we believe are especially useful for newer traders having read them ourselves – ‘What is pips in forex‘, ‘How to swing trade stocks‘, and Trading on different chart timeframes‘.
- Pattern recognition scanner: If you don’t know how to spot chart patterns yet, this tool does it for you. It identifies formations such as head-and-shoulders, double tops, and triangles across your watchlist. Not perfect, but a useful starting point.
- Support is responsive: During our testing, live chat for account holders connected within five minutes on a weekday afternoon. Email responses arrived within two hours. This is reassuring for beginners who have questions about getting started with CMC Markets’ platforms and tools.

Where Beginners Will Struggle
- The platform takes time to learn: CMC’s Next Generation platform is intuitive but it’s still not easy to use at first. In our initial sessions, we noticed the following: The order window layout isn’t immediately readable, stop loss and take profit levels don’t appear on the chart until after the order is placed — confusing for visual learners
- The workspace needs setting up before it becomes useful: 12,000+ instruments with no clear starting point can be overwhelming. Most platforms require some learning, but you should expect to spend at least two weeks before you can place trades comfortably. To help, we recommend pressing the ‘Learn’ button in the top of the platform, which you can see below – this takes you to useful video guides.
- CFDs aren’t right for every beginner: CMC offers CFDs, which are often traded with leverage and are high risk. Most retail accounts lose money trading CFDs at CMC Markets (same as at most CFD brokers).
- No copy trading: You can’t follow and mirror another trader’s positions. For beginners who want to learn by watching experienced traders in action, that’s a gap. eToro, a top-rated copy trading platform, has it.
- Inactivity fee: If you open an account, learn the platform, and then stop using it for 12 months, which some beginners may do if they decide trading isn’t for them, then you will be charged $15 per month (£10 in the UK). While this is not a large fee, beginners should keep their account active or close it properly.

Verdict For Newer Traders
CMC Markets is a good choice for beginners who are willing to spend time learning the platform, utilize the beginner-focused education, understand they may be trading leveraged products, and want access to professional tools as they progress.
It’s not the right fit for anyone wanting a simple mobile-first experience from day one or traders who learn primarily by following others.
If you choose CMC, we suggest beginners start with the demo account for at least two to four weeks. Watch the tutorials in sequence. Only fund your live account once you can place and manage trades without needing to look up instructions.
