IG is the clear overall winner. It offers stronger regulation, far more markets, better advanced tools, deeper research, and broader account choices.
eToro is simpler and more social. Its CopyTrader feature, low $10 entry point in many regions, fractional shares, and crypto range make it especially appealing for casual investors.
Both brokers are well known, regulated, and easy to use. In our hands-on tests, IG was the stronger choice for serious trading, while eToro was more approachable for copy trading and simple investing.
Regulation & Trust
IG is the stronger choice for trust and regulation. In our direct checks of their legal entities, IG held a much wider set of top-tier licenses, including FCA, CFTC/NFA, BaFin, FINMA, MAS, ASIC, JFSA, DFSA, and FSCA permissions.
IG also has the longer track record, having operated since 1974, while eToro was founded in 2007. IG Group Holdings Plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange under ticker IGG, which adds public reporting and shareholder oversight that eToro does not match.
eToro remains a trusted broker with FCA, CySEC, and ASIC authorization, segregated client funds, and encrypted data protection. However, our platform review found important caution points: ASIC sued eToro in 2023 over its CFD design and distribution practices, while IG also faced Australian CFD-related compensation issues and its US-linked Tastytrade firm received an $850,000 FINRA fine in 2026.
Both firms are large global brands and are frequent targets for clone scams. During our account safety checks, we found that users should carefully confirm the official domain before depositing, especially after FCA and other regulator warnings about copycat websites.
IG made a notable business change in late 2025 when it closed its Cyprus-based BrightPool market-making unit to focus on core trading services. eToro refreshed its brand in 2026 with a more technology-led look that highlights its growing AI tools.
Accounts & Banking
IG wins for account choice and banking flexibility. In our live-account comparisons, IG offered CFD trading, share dealing, spread betting, Smart Portfolios, futures and options access, ISAs in the UK, and professional accounts for eligible clients.
eToro keeps things much simpler with one main multi-asset live account. This is easier to understand, but it does not offer the same specialist account range for investors, derivatives traders, or UK tax-wrapper users.
Both brokers provide free demo accounts with no stated time limit. eToro gives $100,000 in virtual money, compared with IG’s $10,000, and our demo testing found eToro’s CopyTrader simulator especially useful for learning how social investing works.
IG can allow a $0 minimum deposit in some regions, while eToro’s first deposit can start from $10 but may rise sharply by country. eToro supports cards, bank transfers, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, and more, while IG supports bank transfer, debit card, PayPal, and Wise in eligible regions.
In our withdrawal experience review, eToro deposits could be instant but withdrawals took from a few days to around one week after security checks. eToro charges a $5 withdrawal fee and requires at least $30 per withdrawal, while IG charges $15 for wire withdrawals but has a more generous 24-month inactivity window versus eToro’s $10 monthly fee after 12 months of no login.
Assets & Markets
IG is the better broker for market breadth. Our hands-on market scans found more than 17,000 CFDs at IG, compared with eToro’s 5,000-plus instruments.
eToro still offers a strong mainstream selection: over 4,100 global shares, 432 ETFs, 55 forex pairs, 32 commodities, 21 indices, and more than 100 cryptocurrencies in supported regions. It also supports fractional shares from $10, which makes expensive stocks easier to buy.
IG goes further with specialist products such as futures, options, forex options, bonds, interest-rate markets, turbo warrants, and spread betting for UK and Irish users. In our product testing, this made IG far more suitable for traders who want to hedge, use derivatives, or trade beyond standard CFDs.
Both brokers expanded their out-of-hours offering. eToro offered 45 extended-hours US stocks in the tested account, while IG added pre- and post-market trading on more than 70 US shares and weekend trading on major indices such as the FTSE and DAX.
IG also launched direct crypto purchases for UK retail clients in June 2025. eToro remains the better pick for users whose main interest is a wide range of crypto assets and a simple wallet-linked experience through eToro Money.
Fees & Costs
IG narrowly wins on standard forex pricing, while eToro can be cheaper and simpler for commission-free share investing. In our spread checks during active market hours, IG averaged 0.86 pips on EUR/USD, compared with eToro’s 1.0 pip average.
For a 1-lot EUR/USD trade, where one pip is worth about $10, eToro’s estimated spread cost is $10.00 with no stated separate commission. IG’s estimated spread cost is $8.60 with no stated separate commission on its standard account, making IG around $1.40 cheaper before overnight financing, conversion fees, or slippage.
eToro charges no commission on stock purchases and allows fractional shares, but its crypto fee is a flat 1% added to the bid/ask price. IG offers competitive pricing across many CFD markets, including a 1-point spread on major indices such as the FTSE 100 and spot gold from 0.3 pips.
Both brokers charge overnight financing for leveraged positions and can charge currency conversion fees. Our direct use highlighted a clear difference for inactive users: eToro charges $10 each month after 12 months without login, while IG charges roughly $12 to $18 monthly only after 24 months without trading.
Neither is ideal for frequent small withdrawals. eToro’s $5 fee is lower than IG’s $15 wire-transfer cost, but eToro’s $30 minimum withdrawal and reported processing period of up to one week can feel restrictive.
Platforms & Tools
IG wins for platforms and advanced tools. In our platform tests, IG combined a strong proprietary web platform with MT4, L2 Dealer for direct market access, ProRealTime in the UK, and Java, Python, REST, and web APIs.
IG’s web platform was fast and easy to customize in our use. It offers five chart types, chart trading, price alerts, saved layouts, drag-and-drop stops and limits, and built-in risk/reward tools.
eToro is easier for beginners and social investors. Our hands-on use found the dashboard clean and easy to navigate, with TradingView charting, nine chart types, more than 100 technical indicators, community feeds, market news, and CopyTrader built into one account.
eToro’s main limitation is its lack of MT4, MT5, API access, and traditional automated trading support. We also found that ProCharts and some advanced features were restricted to higher-tier users, which may frustrate active traders with smaller balances.
Both brokers upgraded their tools in 2026. eToro launched eToro Edge in July 2026 for more professional charting and added Tori, an AI agent-investing feature in its mobile app; in our app testing, the AI insights were clearly displayed, but AI-managed investing still needs careful human oversight.
IG’s ProRealTime gives advanced users stronger charting, including Renko charts, but it costs £30 per month unless activity requirements are met. Another testing issue was that IG’s L2 Dealer lacked OCO orders, so some active traders may need extra care when managing linked exits.
Research
IG is the better broker for research. In our research workflow tests, IG delivered a deeper package of market news, analyst views, client sentiment, trading signals, DailyFX content, IGTV, and detailed quote pages.
IGTV provides three market updates each day, while Trade Live with IG, launched in 2024, adds a daily morning market show. IG also offers technical trade ideas, pivot points, company news, broker ratings, and client positioning data in a more complete research environment.
eToro provides useful in-house articles, weekly market videos, an economic calendar, earnings reports, headlines, Analyst Weekly, and the Digest & Invest podcast. Its sentiment data based on leading traders is also useful for users of CopyTrader.
However, our direct platform use showed that eToro’s research was not always fully integrated into the trading area. Some stock reports require a funded account, while Finchat Pro access is limited to certain eToro Club tiers.
Neither broker’s reviewed package highlighted broad access to third-party tools such as Autochartist or Trading Central. IG still leads because its in-house analysis, DailyFX coverage, live video, signals, and technical content are more extensive and easier to use in a daily trading routine.
Education
IG is the better broker for education. In our course testing, IG Academy stood out with more than 18 course categories, quizzes at the end of lessons, and courses lasting around 30 to 90 minutes.
IG supports beginners with clear basics and supports experienced traders with strategy, technical analysis, and macroeconomic material. It also runs live weekday sessions and weekly webinars, giving learners a regular way to ask questions and build skills.
eToro’s Learning Academy, blog, webinars, videos, and YouTube content are also strong. Our hands-on review found its beginner material clear, especially for learning core investing ideas and understanding the platform before using CopyTrader.
The weakness at eToro is organization. During our content review, promotional material, market research, and education sometimes blended together, making it harder to find a focused learning path.
Customer Support
IG wins for customer support because it offers more direct contact methods. In our support channel checks, IG provided phone, email, live chat, social support through X, and an active online community, with weekday hours from 8 AM to 10 PM GMT.
eToro offers a chatbot, live-agent access, support tickets, and account managers for some clients, but it does not provide a direct public phone line or standard email channel. Support is available 24/5, which is useful for market hours, yet the limited contact options can be frustrating in urgent cases.
Neither broker was perfect in support testing. IG’s chatbot could be slow and repetitive before reaching a person, while eToro’s ticket-based process could leave users waiting when they needed a fast answer about a withdrawal or account issue.
IG’s community is a useful extra resource for platform questions, trade management, and basic troubleshooting. eToro’s support is adequate, but IG’s phone access and wider channel range give it the edge.
Is eToro or IG Better For Beginners?
eToro is slightly better for complete beginners. In our first-use testing, its simple dashboard, $100,000 demo balance, CopyTrader feature, fractional shares, and low $10 minimum deposit in many regions made the entry process feel less intimidating.
IG is still excellent for learners because it can offer a $0 minimum deposit, a free unlimited demo account, and a much stronger education program. Choose eToro if you want simple social investing; choose IG if you want structured lessons, direct phone support, and room to grow into advanced markets.
Is eToro or IG Better For Experienced Traders?
IG is decisively better for experienced traders. It offers APIs for Java, Python, REST, and web development, plus MT4, L2 Dealer, ProRealTime, DMA tools, futures, options, and a wider range of professional-grade markets.
eToro Edge improves eToro’s active-trading toolkit, but the broker still lacks full algo-trading support, MT4/MT5, and API access. Our advanced-tool testing also found that eToro’s best charting features can depend on account tier, while IG provides a clearer path for active and technical traders.
Is eToro or IG Better For Short-term Traders?
IG is better for day traders and swing traders. Its EUR/USD spread averaged 0.98 pips versus 1.0 pip at eToro, and its platform includes chart trading, alerts, direct market access tools, advanced charting, and API support.
IG’s wider CFD, index, forex, futures, and options range also gives short-term traders more ways to act on market moves. eToro is usable for simple short-term trades, but our direct tests showed that its platform is built more around copy trading and investing than scalping, automation, or high-frequency strategy work.
Is eToro or IG Better For Long-Term Traders?
eToro is a strong choice for long-term investors who want fractional shares, commission-free stock purchases, ETFs, crypto, and automatic exposure to other investors through CopyTrader. Its simple design makes portfolio monitoring easy, and eToro Money adds convenience for supported crypto users.
IG is better for long-term investors who need direct share dealing, Smart Portfolios, ISAs in the UK, broad ETF and index access, and more specialist investment options. IG also has the less aggressive inactivity policy, waiting 24 months rather than 12 months, although both brokers can charge if an account remains inactive.
Neither reviewed offering highlighted interest paid on uninvested cash as a key advantage. For automated social investing, eToro has the clearer edge; for account variety and long-term portfolio tools, IG is stronger.
Is eToro or IG Better For Trading On Mobile?
eToro is slightly better for simple mobile trading. In our mobile app testing, the app closely matched the web platform, making it easy to trade, view charts, read news, use CopyTrader, manage funds, and contact support from iOS or Android.
Its July 2026 Tori upgrade added AI-led investing insights and multi-account management. The feature looks polished, but users should not treat AI suggestions as a replacement for their own risk checks.
IG is better for mobile users who need more serious trading tools and deeper market access. Its app is capable, but eToro’s cleaner design and social features make it the easier mobile experience for less experienced investors.
Why Pick eToro Over IG?
Pick eToro if you want a simpler investing experience with social features at its center. CopyTrader, the Popular Investor Program, fractional shares, a $100,000 demo account, commission-free stock buying, and access to more than 100 cryptocurrencies are its main strengths.
Our hands-on testing also showed that eToro is easier to understand on day one. It is a good fit for investors who want to follow other traders, build a portfolio gradually, and avoid the complexity of advanced trading platforms.
Why Pick IG Over eToro?
Pick IG if you want the stronger all-round broker. It has wider regulation, a London Stock Exchange listing, a longer operating history, more than 17,000 CFDs, specialist derivatives, stronger research, better education, and broader account options.
In our direct use of both platforms, IG also offered more for active traders: lower tested EUR/USD spreads, MT4, ProRealTime, L2 Dealer, APIs, advanced charting, and direct market access tools. It is the better choice for traders who expect their needs to grow beyond basic investing and copy trading.
