How To Change Leverage On XM

Changing leverage at XM is straightforward, but you have to understand the rules for your account, region, and status as a retail trader vs a professional investor.

Remember that leverage simply reduces your upfront margin requirement per position – it does not increase your actual capital base – but it magnifies your risk exposure. I know – I’ve placed hundreds of real-money trades with leverage over more than five years.

Regulatory Boundaries

Before adjusting your leverage parameters, you must understand the regulatory limits governing your account. As a heavily regulated global broker, XM must enforce regional leverage caps mandated by local financial regulators, such as ESMA in Europe and ASIC in Australia.

Under these regulatory frameworks, standard retail trading profiles are capped at 1:30 for major currency pairs and 1:20 for stock indices. If you are a retail trader within these jurisdictions, your leverage settings are capped by law and cannot be manually adjusted via XM’s online dashboard.

Here’s a breakdown of the maximum leverage available at each XM entity:

XM Entities Maximum Leverage Comparison
XM Entity & Regulator Maximum Leverage Max Exposure ($100 Deposit)
Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd (CySEC) 1:30 $3,000
Trading Point MENA Limited (DFSA) 1:30 $3,000
TPXMGLOBAL Kenya Limited (CMA Kenya) 1:1000 $100,000
XM ZA (Pty) Ltd (FSCA South Africa) 1:1000 $100,000
XM Financial Products Promotion L.L.C (UAE SCA / Mauritius) 1:1000 $100,000
XM Global Limited (Belize FSC) 1:1000 $100,000
XM International MU Limited (FSC Mauritius) 1:1000 $100,000
XM (SC) Limited (Seychelles FSA) 1:1000 $100,000

Dynamic Leverage Caps

Even under XM’s entities that offer up to 1:1000 leverage, the maximum level available scales dynamically based on your total account equity (calculated across all accounts under your profile):

XM Dynamic Leverage Caps by Account Equity
Total Account Equity (USD) Maximum Leverage
$5 – $40,000 Up to 1:1000
$40,001 – $80,000 Capped at 1:500
$80,001 – $200,000 Capped at 1:200
Over $200,000 Capped at 1:100

If a deposit or open profit pushes your equity into a higher tier, XM dynamically reduces your maximum leverage.

Leverage Varies by Asset

Changing your account leverage to 1:1000 will primarily apply to forex majors and spot gold. Individual asset classes carry fixed maximum margin caps regardless of your account setting. For instance, shares are capped at 1:5, indices around 1:50–1:100, and crypto CFDs up to 1:250–1:500).

Accessing Your Account Portal

To review your current leverage parameters or submit a modification request, log in to your main web cashier portal via the XM homepage. This secure administrative member area is where all structural account adjustments are managed.

Once inside the XM dashboard, locate your primary account summary card under the ‘My Accounts’ overview window. Here, you will see a detailed breakdown of your active trading accounts, platform configurations, and current leverage settings.

Modifying Settings On Flexible Accounts

If your regulatory account type or demo setup allows manual leverage modifications:

  1. Locate the specific XM account card you wish to adjust.
  2. Click the settings icon or expand the operational options dropdown menu next to your account number.
  3. Click the ‘Change Leverage’ option.
  4. An interface window will appear with a dropdown selection listing all available leverage ratios. Select your preferred trading ratio and submit your request. The system will automatically update your parameters, and the new margin calculation metrics will apply to your active positions shortly.
Warning: Reducing your leverage while you hold open trades increases your required margin for those positions. For example, dropping leverage from 1:500 to 1:100 increases your required margin fivefold. So ensure your account has sufficient free margin before submitting a lower leverage request to avoid triggering an instant margin call (50%) or stop-out (20%), with the latter automatically closing your positions.

Upgrading To Professional Status

For retail traders trading under ESMA or ASIC caps who want to access higher institutional leverage ratios, you must submit a formal application for an upgraded Professional Trader Account.

  1. Locate the professional application link within your XM account profile settings to open the registration questionnaire
  2. The platform will display the statutory regulatory requirements. To qualify, you must meet at least two of the following three core criteria:
    • Portfolio Size: Hold a verified financial asset portfolio (including cash deposits and financial instruments) exceeding €500,000.
    • Trading History: Have carried out consistent, high-volume transactions on relevant financial markets (averaging 10 positions per quarter over the past year).
    • Professional Experience: Have worked for at least one year in the financial sector in a professional position that requires knowledge of CFD trading.
  3. Check the qualifying criteria boxes, upload your verifying bank or investment statements, and submit the form for manual review by XM’s compliance desk.
