Quick Verdict

Only Firstrade accepts traders from USA. Given that Firstrade is highly rated and earned our confidence during testing, it's our clear recommendation for traders in your country.

Firstrade is the stronger overall choice for U.S. securities, low-cost options, fractional shares, and mobile trading. Qtrade is better shaped for Canadian investors who need registered accounts, GICs, bonds, and deeper portfolio planning.

Both brokers offer $0 stock and ETF commissions, listed options, mutual funds, web platforms, and mobile apps. Neither offers forex, futures, direct crypto trading, or a proper practice account with simulated orders.

Qtrade focuses on Canadian tax-efficient investing and research-led portfolio building. Firstrade offers broader U.S. market access, more flexible account choices, cheaper options trading, and a smoother mobile experience.

Qtrade vs Firstrade platform comparison side by side

Regulation & Trust

Qtrade Firstrade
Trust Rating 3.8 4.3

Firstrade has the stronger trust profile for U.S. securities investors. It has operated since 1985, is regulated as a U.S. broker-dealer through SEC and FINRA rules, and provides SIPC coverage up to $500,000, including up to $250,000 for cash.

Firstrade also has excess clearing-level protection through Apex, with a per-customer combined cap of $37.5 million. We checked Firstrade Securities Inc. in FINRA BrokerCheck and reviewed its SIPC and order-routing disclosures, though its private ownership gives investors less public financial detail than a listed broker.

Qtrade is also a trustworthy domestic brokerage for Canadians. We checked the current Aviso Financial Inc. structure after the 2024 amalgamation, CIRO oversight, and CIPF membership; eligible GICs can also receive CDIC cover up to C$100,000 per issuer where applicable.

Both protection schemes cover broker insolvency rather than trading losses. Qtrade users should also watch for brand impersonators after a CIRO alert involving fake Qtrade branding, while Firstrade users should avoid lookalike domains.

Accounts & Banking

Qtrade Firstrade
Accounts Rating 3.5 3.8

Firstrade has the more flexible account range, especially for U.S. retirement savers and eligible international clients. It supports individual, joint, custodial, trust, estate, entity, Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, and Coverdell ESA accounts.

We opened a live Firstrade account, submitted the required documents in 5 minutes, and received same-day activation. Its Cash Management Account adds debit-card and ATM features, although it requires $25,000 in equity.

Qtrade is the better fit for Canadian account wrappers. We moved through its cash, margin, TFSA, RRSP, RRIF, RESP, FHSA, joint, LIF, and LRIF account menus, and the setup clearly centers on household investing and registered-account administration.

Qtrade’s 30-day access only let us view watchlists, quotes, and research, while Firstrade provided no simulated order environment at all; this makes it harder for new users to rehearse option or stop-order tickets safely.

Firstrade supports ACH, cheque, and wire funding, with ACH limits of $100,000 in and $50,000 out per day. ACH withdrawal requests made before 1:00 PM ET are processed the same day and normally arrive within 1-2 business days, but deposits carry a 60-day rule that sends withdrawals only back to the original bank.

We followed Qtrade’s Interac deposit path and found the screens clear and quick to complete. Its transfer-in rebate reaches C$150 on qualifying transfers of at least C$15,000, but registered withdrawals can cost C$50 to C$125 and some USD registered accounts have a US$15 quarterly fee without Investor Plus status.

Assets & Markets

Qtrade Firstrade
Assets Rating 4.0 4.3

Firstrade offers a strong securities range within its U.S.-only focus. It provides U.S. exchange-listed and OTC stocks, 2,200+ ETFs, listed options, 11,000+ mutual funds, bonds, CDs, and fractional investing in 4,000+ stocks and ETFs from $5.

We filled out a U.S. equity order ticket with quantity, order type, duration, and price controls, then checked the extended-hours trading choices. Firstrade also expanded its investing tools through its 2024 fractional-shares launch and added its Capitalize rollover partnership in 2025.

Qtrade offers a stronger product mix for Canadian portfolio builders especially. It supports Canadian and U.S. stocks, ETFs, options, mutual funds, bonds, exchange-traded debentures, and GICs, with useful access to lower-cost F-series mutual funds.

We used Qtrade’s asset search to find Nvidia and then moved from the quote page into its research material. The process was simple, but Qtrade has no forex, futures, direct crypto venue, or broad direct access to overseas exchanges; Firstrade has the same gaps apart from its OTC access and wider U.S. stock coverage.

Fees & Costs

Qtrade Firstrade
Costs Rating 3.7 3.8

The two brokers are closely priced for ordinary share and ETF investing. Both charge $0 commission on online stocks and ETFs, though investors should still consider currency conversion, product fees, and account-service charges.

Firstrade is cheaper for listed options. A one-contract options trade costs $0.02375 in disclosed regulatory fees at Firstrade, while Qtrade charges C$0.75 per contract; neither applies an options commission, but the amounts are in different currencies.

We reviewed each live fee schedule rather than stopping at the zero-commission headline. Firstrade also charges no options exercise or assignment fee, while its margin rate starts at 12.00% below $25,000 and drops to 8.00% above $1 million, making borrowed money expensive for smaller accounts.

Qtrade made a major pricing change when it moved to C$0 online equity, ETF, and mutual fund trades and removed quarterly administration fees for many clients. Its options pricing remains higher, and a mutual fund sold or switched within 90 days can trigger a 1% fee with a C$45 minimum.

Qtrade’s fixed-income charge is generally C$1 per C$1,000 face value for bonds and exchange-traded debentures. Firstrade charges $25 for outgoing domestic or international wires and $30 for primary-market CDs, while Qtrade has specific deregistration, certificate, and special-payment costs that can surprise infrequent users.

Execution

Firstrade publishes Rule 606 and 607 order-routing information and considers price improvement, order size, and execution quality. We placed U.S.-listed equity orders through the standard ticket and found the workflow easy, but it lacks direct-market-access controls, routing choice, and the low-latency setup sought by scalpers.

Qtrade supports market, limit, stop market, stop limit, trailing stop market, and trailing stop limit orders for Canadian and U.S. equities. We opened its order-entry screens and checked quote depth; Canadian Level 2 data appeared during order entry, but U.S. Level 2 was unavailable, which limits active U.S. traders.

Neither broker is built around high-speed execution, algorithmic routing, or professional order management. Firstrade is more useful for low-cost U.S. options and extended-hours trading, while Qtrade is more suitable for controlled investing orders inside Canadian registered accounts.

Platforms & Tools

Qtrade Firstrade
Platforms Rating 3.5 3.5

The platform comparison is tight because both brokers offer capable web and mobile tools without a desktop trading terminal, API, VPS, or automated-trading setup. They work best for self-directed investors rather than users who need multi-monitor layouts, backtesting, or custom algorithmic workflows.

We used Qtrade’s real-time watchlists, alerts, Portfolio Analytics, Portfolio Score, Goal Planning, Portfolio Simulator, and Portfolio Creator. Its tools are practical for asset allocation, but its conservative interface can feel plain and platform sessions may time out during longer research work.

Qtrade’s mobile app gained options trading, a meaningful upgrade for investors who want to manage listed contracts away from a desktop. The app remains more of a portfolio companion than an active-trading workstation.

We used Firstrade’s Stock Matcher by setting a price range of $0 to $200 and excluding dividend-paying stocks, then reviewed the matching share list. Firstrade also offers OptionsWizard, Market Buzz, Technical Insight, advanced mobile charts, FirstradeGPT beta, alerts, DRIP, and securities lending controls.

Firstrade’s design felt functional but somewhat old-fashioned during longer platform sessions. Its lack of deep chart customization, strategy backtesting, and API access is a clear limit, even with useful upgrades such as FirstradeGPT beta and full-screen mobile charting.

Research

Qtrade Firstrade
Research Rating 3.3 4.3

Firstrade provides the wider research package for U.S. stock and options users. It combines Morningstar, Briefing.com, Zacks, earnings data, IPO browsing, options ideas, Market Buzz sentiment, and an ETF screener with 30+ criteria.

We ran searches through Firstrade’s screener and stock-matching tools, then compared its earnings and options idea pages. The output is useful for finding candidates, although data-heavy traders may still want specialist charting and institutional research elsewhere.

Qtrade remains particularly strong for fund research and portfolio construction. We compared ETFs and mutual funds, drilled into holdings, screened mandates, and used Morningstar reports, Recognia analysis, Dow Jones and Desjardins briefings, and Qtrade Options Lab powered by Trading Central.

Qtrade’s research feels better connected to Canadian registered-account decisions and fund selection. Firstrade has the broader U.S. research menu, while Qtrade offers the more focused workflow for Canadian long-term portfolios.

Education

Qtrade Firstrade
Education Rating 3.5 4.0

Firstrade has the more complete learning hub for mainstream securities investors. Its Education Center covers stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, fixed income, margin, options, and core trading terms with clear written guides and videos.

We watched lessons on placing stock trades, placing option trades, covered calls, trailing stops, ETF basics, and margin accounts. The material is easy to follow, though it does not provide a deep course path for advanced options systems or quantitative trading.

Qtrade also provides well-organized education for new and experienced investors. Its guides explain account types, portfolio building, ETFs, mutual funds, margin, options, and platform workflows, then link users back to the relevant screeners and planning tools.

Qtrade’s content is especially helpful for Canadians learning how TFSAs, RRSPs, and other registered accounts fit into a portfolio. Firstrade gives a broader set of practical U.S. securities lessons, while Qtrade gives more context for Canadian investing decisions.

Customer Support

Qtrade Firstrade
Support Rating 3.3 3.5

Support is closely balanced, with both brokers offering phone and email rather than 24/7 live trading desks. Firstrade adds an Intercom-based help center, while Qtrade includes a secure Message Centre for account-specific servicing.

We checked the support routes for transfers, tax documents, login issues, options, and retirement accounts. Firstrade’s main phone line runs Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM ET, which is useful for standard U.S. account needs but not ideal for late-evening help.

Qtrade’s phone support is available Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM ET. Its longer evening window is useful for Canadian account administration, though the lack of instant chat can frustrate users who need quick answers during a trading session.

Both brokers handle complex account topics better than they handle urgent, real-time trader requests. Transfer friction, response delays, and account restrictions remain common pressure points when users need a problem fixed quickly.

Community Sentiment

Qtrade receives positive feedback for its research depth, broad Canadian account support, and clean investing workflow. The main complaints involve account transfers, session timeouts, service consistency, and fees that appear outside the headline commission price.

Firstrade users often value $0 options contracts, OTC shares, U.S. account choice, and fractional investing. Less positive feedback centers on withdrawal restrictions, transfer delays, support responsiveness, and platform limits against larger active-trading brokers.

Both platforms suit patient investors better than users who expect a friction-free fintech app. Administrative tasks, security controls, and tax-account processes can add delays at either broker.

Is Qtrade or Firstrade Better For Beginners?

Qtrade is better for Canadian beginners because it explains local account types well and connects lessons directly to screeners, research, and portfolio-planning tools. Its registered-account range helps new Canadian investors start with a TFSA or RRSP structure that fits their goals.

Firstrade is better for U.S. beginners who want low-cost fractional shares, simple order entry, and a stronger education library. Neither broker has a real demo account, so beginners should start with small positions and spend time learning order types before using options or margin.

Is Qtrade or Firstrade Better For Experienced Traders?

Firstrade is the stronger choice for experienced U.S. options traders because of its $0 contract fee, OptionsWizard, and extended-hours controls.

Qtrade is more useful for experienced Canadian investors managing multiple tax wrappers, bonds, GICs, mutual funds, and portfolio allocations.

Active traders should note Qtrade’s missing U.S. Level 2 data and Firstrade’s limited routing and customization tools.

Is Qtrade or Firstrade Better For Short-term Traders?

Firstrade is the better fit for short-term U.S. options and stock traders because it has no stock, ETF, or options contract commissions and supports extended-hours trading. Its basic execution setup still falls short for scalpers who need route control, very fast tools, or algorithmic strategies.

Qtrade supports useful stop and trailing-stop orders, but its platform is built more for investing than rapid trading. Qtrade’s C$0.75 options contract charge, lack of forex and futures, and missing U.S. Level 2 data further reduce its appeal for frequent short-term activity.

Is Qtrade or Firstrade Better For Long-Term Traders?

Qtrade is the better long-term choice for Canadians because it combines Canadian and U.S. shares with ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, GICs, and many registered accounts. Its portfolio analytics, fund tools, and support for F-series funds help investors build and maintain diversified portfolios.

Firstrade is a strong long-term U.S. alternative for zero-commission stocks and ETFs, fractional shares, IRAs, mutual funds, fixed income, DRIP, and a wide U.S. securities menu. Its $25,000 Cash Management Account threshold and U.S.-only market focus are the main limits.

Is Qtrade or Firstrade Better For Trading On Mobile?

Firstrade is better for mobile trading thanks to cleaner navigation, easy watchlists, options-chain access, account management, full-screen charts, alerts, and straightforward trade entry. Its app is more polished for placing and monitoring U.S. securities trades from a phone.

Qtrade’s mobile app has improved with options trading and works well for checking a portfolio or managing investments. It still feels more limited for frequent mobile execution, and its Android experience is a notable weakness.

Why Pick Qtrade Over Firstrade?

Choose Qtrade if you are a Canadian investor who needs TFSA, RRSP, RESP, FHSA, RRIF, and other registered accounts alongside stocks, ETFs, funds, bonds, and GICs. Its Portfolio Analytics, Morningstar material, Recognia tools, fund screening, and fixed-income access create a more complete Canadian investing workspace.

Qtrade also stands out for investors who want portfolio planning rather than constant trading. The move to C$0 online equity, ETF, and mutual-fund commissions made it far more competitive for regular buy-and-hold investing.

Why Pick Firstrade Over Qtrade?

Choose Firstrade if you want U.S. stocks, OTC securities, fractional shares, and listed options with no contract fee. It has a broader U.S. securities menu, more IRA and entity-account types, extended-hours trading, and stronger mobile usability.

Firstrade is also the better choice for options-focused investors who want OptionsWizard, market sentiment tools, and lower contract costs. Its 2024 fractional-share expansion and Capitalize rollover partnership give U.S. investors more practical ways to start and consolidate an account.
