Quick Verdict

Neither eToro nor XM accepts traders from USA. Instead, we recommend Interactive Brokers, a top-rated alternative that impressed our team during testing and accepts traders from your location.

eToro offers more assets, real stocks, ETFs, and many cryptocurrencies. XM focuses more on forex, CFDs, and flexible account types.

Both brokers provide demos, copy trading, mobile apps, learning tools, and regulated services. Their fees, protections, and available features depend on location.

eToro suits social investing and simple portfolio building. XM better supports MetaTrader, automated strategies, and lower-cost active trading.

Regulation & Trust

Both brokers use segregated client funds and negative balance protection in many regions. Both also face clone scams, so traders should verify domains and licences.

eToro holds licences from the FCA, CySEC, and ASIC. It also uses encryption to protect customer data.

However, eToro faced ASIC legal action in 2023 over CFD distribution duties. It was also fined in Ontario during 2018.

XM’s safety depends greatly on the entity handling the account. Its CySEC entity offers stronger protection, including €20,000 compensation cover.

XM’s offshore entities in Belize, Mauritius, and Seychelles have lighter safeguards. XM is not publicly listed and has no banking licence.

Accounts & Banking

Both brokers offer simple sign-up, demo accounts, cards, bank transfers, and e-wallets. Payment choices and account conditions can vary by country.

eToro has one main account and supports EUR, GBP, and USD. Its minimum first deposit ranges from $10 to $10,000 by location.

eToro charges a $5 withdrawal fee with a $30 minimum withdrawal. It charges $10 monthly after twelve inactive months.

XM offers Micro, Standard, Ultra Low, and Shares accounts. Minimum deposits start from $5 across its main account types.

XM processes most deposits instantly and withdrawals within 24 hours after verification. It charges no withdrawal fees, except possible small wire transfer charges.

XM charges $15 after inactivity. It also offers swap-free Ultra Low accounts in eligible regions.

eToro offers a $100,000 virtual demo balance. XM provides $10,000, or the equivalent currency amount.

eToro has a Popular Investor program for traders with copiers. XM offers bonuses, referral rewards, loyalty benefits, and trading competitions in eligible regions.

Assets & Markets

eToro offers over 6,000 instruments, while XM offers over 1,400. Both provide forex, stocks, indices, commodities, and crypto-related trading.

eToro has over 4,100 global stocks, 432 ETFs, and over 100 cryptocurrencies. It also supports fractional shares and extended-hours US stock trading.

XM offers over 55 forex pairs and over 1,200 stock CFDs. It provides real shares through selected Shares Accounts.

XM does not offer bonds or ETFs. Its crypto offering uses CFDs in selected regions, not direct cryptocurrency ownership.

eToro provides stronger choice for diversified investing. XM provides solid CFD market coverage, including thematic indices and precious metals.

Fees & Costs

Both brokers charge currency conversion fees in certain situations. Both also charge inactivity fees on dormant accounts.

eToro’s EUR/USD spread is around 1.0 pip. Its crypto fee is 1%, added to the market bid-ask price.

eToro offers commission-free stock purchases, including fractional shares from $10. Its spread pricing may not suit frequent ECN-style traders.

XM’s Ultra Low account offers spreads from 0.8 pips. It charges no separate commission on that account type.

XM generally has lower funding costs because withdrawals are usually free. Its pricing may better suit cost-focused forex traders.

Platforms & Tools

Both brokers offer browser platforms, iOS apps, Android apps, charts, alerts, and copy trading. Both also provide market insights and watchlists.

eToro has a simple in-house platform with a single dashboard. It includes TradingView charts, over 100 indicators, and nine chart types.

eToro’s CopyTrader lets users copy investors using risk and asset filters. Users can set stop-loss and take-profit limits.

Some eToro tools, including ProCharts, require higher account tiers. It does not support MT4, MT5, or automated trading systems.

XM supports MT4, MT5, WebTrader, TradingView Charts, and automated trading. MT5 offers over 80 analysis tools and more order types.

XM offers a free VPS for eligible automated traders. Others can access it for $28 monthly.

XM’s mobile app lacks some advanced technical tools. eToro’s app offers fuller platform access and AI-powered Tori features.

Research

Both brokers provide market analysis, economic calendars, news, and educational market updates. Their research helps traders follow economic events and price changes.

eToro offers weekly videos, articles, earnings reports, podcasts, and trader sentiment data. Some research tools need better platform integration.

eToro’s technical research is weaker than its fundamental research. Certain reports and Finchat Pro access need funded accounts or club status.

XM provides daily analysis, technical reports, fundamental reports, and Trading Central insights. Its tools are especially useful for forex and short-term market analysis.

XM could improve app integration for Trading Central. eToro offers broader investing research for stocks, funds, and cryptocurrencies.

Education

Both brokers offer videos, webinars, articles, and learning material for newer traders. Their education covers market basics, strategies, and trading concepts.

eToro provides a Learning Academy, blogs, webinars, and a large YouTube library. Its material can sometimes blur education, research, and promotion.

XM offers webinars every day in over 20 languages. It also provides Tradepedia videos, podcasts, live sessions, and XM Community content.

XM’s education has wider live-language support. eToro’s learning tools better match its simple investing platform and copy trading features.

Customer Support

Both brokers offer online support, but XM provides more contact options. Support quality can vary by region, language, and query type.

eToro offers 24/5 support through chat, agents, and support tickets. It does not provide direct phone or email support.

eToro account managers may help with urgent cases. However, not every customer receives an account manager.

XM offers 24/7 support through live chat, email, and phone. Its support covers over 30 languages.

XM generally offers faster and more direct support access. Some users still report inconsistent service quality and slow complaint handling.

Community Sentiment

XM receives strong mobile app ratings, with over 4.5 out of five stars. Reviews often praise execution, spreads, education, and small-account access.

Some users report delayed payments, verification problems, and withdrawal disputes. Complaints are more common around offshore entities and bonus rules.

XM responds publicly to many complaints on review platforms. However, traders should carefully check their account entity before depositing.
