If you want a broker that caters to Pakistani residents with features like Islamic trading accounts, FOREX.com performed the best in our tests.

Is IG Regulated In Pakistan?

No, IG is not regulated by either of the two financial agencies that govern financial trading products:

  1. The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP): Licenses brokerages operating inside the country
  2. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP): Oversees foreign exchange transactions and rules

Neither the SECP nor SBP grants licenses to CFD brokers such as IG. We also downloaded the list of licensed securities brokers and futures brokers from the SECP and searched for ‘IG’. There was a similarly spelt ‘IGI Finex Securities Limited’, but this is not related to IG.

Does IG Accept Residents From Pakistan?

No, IG does not accept traders from Pakistan. Despite some affiliate marketing websites claiming they do, we confirmed they don’t. We asked IG’s live chat support, who said they don’t, as you can see below.

However, because IG uses an AI chatbot, we wanted to double-check this. So, we tried to sign up for an account using a VPN set to an IP address in Karachi, but when it came to selecting the country we were from in the country drop-down, which is listed alphabetically, Pakistan was not on the list. It should have appeared where the red arrow is below.

Also, in 2022, the State Bank of Pakistan told banks and exchange firms to halt payments to overseas FX and CFD platforms. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) have also blocked access to the unauthorized domains of some offshore brokers under FERA 1947.

The alternative is a locally regulated broker with access to the Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX). However, they tend to offer futures on the centralized clearing exchange, rather than contracts for difference (CFDs), which are popular with short-term traders and offered by many decentralized overseas brokers.

If you want to use a global brokerage, it’s worth finding a firm that provides the features and environment that will make your trading experience smoother as a Pakistani resident. Notably, Islamic accounts so no swaps are charged on overnight CFD positions and trading accounts in PKR to make managing transfers and balances smoother while reducing conversion fees.
